Trinity University’s teacher preparation program is recognized as one of seven premier teacher preparation programs in the nation. This 30-hour, one-year graduate program begins in July and is completed over three semesters. During the school year, students take 12 hours each semester while completing a full-year internship under the guidance of a mentor teacher in one of Trinity’s Professional Development Schools.

Trinity Undergraduates
Trinity undergraduates planning to enter the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program complete a major plus either the Minor in Teaching or prerequisite courses within the Department of Education.

- Apply to our Education Preparation Program/Master of Arts in Teaching Program
- Complete program prerequisites prior to entry
- Complete two semesters of internship and concurrent graduate coursework
- Register, pay and pass certification exams (and/or edTPA portfolio assessment): $116 per exam
- Apply for TEA state application fee - $79
- Complete fingerprinting/background check - $49 (prices may change)
- Receive certification recommendation

Courses of Study Bulletin
Candidates for a baccalaureate degree must fulfill the requirements for a major as listed in the courses of study bulletin. The courses of study bulletin is the official source of information regarding degree requirements, academic policies, and academic majors and minors at Trinity University.
Pathways Curriculum
Students must complete the Pathways Curriculum in order to receive a baccalaureate degree. The Pathways Curriculum has six curricular requirements, and three optional elements that provide the foundation in the liberal arts and sciences for all the bachelor’s degrees awarded by Trinity University. Through these requirements, students acquire the necessary skills and disciplinary perspectives to navigate complex questions at Trinity and in their post-graduate lives.
Where can I Teach?
Teaching is complex, professional work that requires a broad repertoire of knowledge, skills, and the judgment developed from experience about how to best use this repertoire for success. Intensive coaching relationships are prominent in a Trinity education, allowing students to hone their practice through a supportive apprenticeship.
Candidates complete clinical practice in cohorts at one of Trinity's Professional Development Schools. While completing their internships, degree candidates are supervised by carefully identified and specially trained mentor teachers in area Professional Development Schools where Trinity has developed a long and sustained partnership.
Teaching out of State or Abroad
Trinity's M.A.T. program is accredited by the Texas Education Agency, and is one of only a dozen Educator Preparation Programs in Texas boasting accreditation by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Graduates who wish to obtain certification in other states benefit from this association and the reciprocity agreements shared by many NCATE accredited institutions.
Understanding Learners with Exceptionalities in School and Society
Identify the causes, characteristics, strategies, trends, and issues in teaching students with exceptionalities.
Schooling in America
Study the American school and its role in contemporary society through analysis of the literature related to effective schools and successful teaching and learning practices.
Reading Difficulties With Diverse Population in the Middle School
Learn about reading theory, assessment, materials, and strategies for instructing middle school students with reading difficulties through on-site supervised experiences.

Hands-on Experience
Upward Bound
Upward Bound programs provide fundamental support to their participants in preparation for college. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege coursework in high school and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.
College Advising Corps
Trinity University's College Advising Corps places exceptional recent graduates from all fields of study on high school campuses as near-peer college advisers to lead low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students to college. Trinity currently has 16 college advisers in San Antonio-area high schools employed full time through this program, and earning AmeriCorps Service Scholarships for graduate studies or college loan pay-off.
